Harvest Soybeans at the Right Time

Harvest timing can make a difference in your soybean returns. Soybeans are generally marketed at 13% moisture. As they dry below 13%, water weight is lost and the risk of shattering increases.

At $15/bu, a 50 bu/ac crop is worth approximately:

  • 13% moisture: $750/ac
  • 10% moisture: $725/ac
  • 8% moisture: $709/ac
  • 7% moisture: $702/ac

That’s nearly $48/ac in moisture-related value lost from 13% to 7%, before accounting for shatter and combine losses.

Spread Maturity

Planting soybean varieties with different maturity ratings can help spread harvest across your acres and keep the combine moving. In the 2,300–2,375 CHU South-Central Manitoba region, even a few days of maturity difference can create additional harvest opportunities.

Check the Seed, Not Just the Plant

Green stems and leaves don't always mean the soybeans are too wet. Check actual seed moisture in different areas of the field and across varieties and soil types.

Grow the bushels. Protect the bushels. When they’re ready, get them in the bin.
